Bronco hits milestone in win; Wolves and 'Horns prevail
WAUNETA, Neb. — Senior Alexa Sandman made her 1,000th career dig as the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos won a wild match over Medicine Valley Tuesday evening.
The Raiders (8-12) were ready to pull off a big road win, taking two of those first three sets including one 30-28 thriller.
“It was a fun match! Great to be a part of,” Med Valley coach Diana Klein confirmed.
Yet the Broncos (11-10) were able to survive 13 Raider ace serves with four from junior Millia Farr and sophomore Sienna Houghtelling served anoter three.
Sophomore Stella Heapy peppered the court for 15 kills while senior Kaylyn Roblee crushed 11.
Raider sophomore setter Kylie Rose totaled 23 assists.
The Broncos still won those last two sets 25-20, 15-9 behind leaders like Sandman, GraCee Goings, Izabelle Stehno, Peyton Cox and Cali Cox.
Wolves and Longhorns triumph
HAYES CENTER, Neb. — A warning arrived for Maywood and Hayes Center evening the Wolves’ 20th volleyball of this season Tuesday evening.
“We are going to have to play with a little more intensity if we are going to reach our season goals,” coach Kory Rohde said following the 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 victory over visiting Sutherland Sailors.
The Wolves (20-2) know something about big goals considering they went 28-2 and reached last year’s Class D-2 state semifinals.
They unleashed a good bite on the Sailors Thursday night as always feisty redhead Olivia Hansen ripped 13 kills, Maddie Doyle 10 and setter Kiley Hejtmanek served 14 points with three aces.
Sophomore Kyla Patel pummeled the Sailors, posting eight kills and an ace block.
Junior Alexis Wood added 12 assists and every Wolves’ favorite funny girl — junior Stevie Handsaker — served another 11 points.
The Wolves will take winning momentum into defense of their RPAC tournament on Monday.
“It wasn’t always pretty, but it was a win,” Rohde concluded.
Sutherland slipped to 13-12 this season.
Longhorns hit 21-4
IMPERIAL, Neb. — Chase County served 18 aces while clobbering Kimball 25-11, 25-13, 25-9 Tuesday night and raising the record to 21-4 this season.
Senior Jerzee Milner sent five ace serves past those “other Longhorns” with junior Elizabeth Reeves serving four.
Junior Joelle Clevenger and sophomore Tristan Nordhausen added three aces apiece.
Chase was also tough at the net where junior Bryn McNair blasted 17 kills. Junior Giselle Ocuna (nine) and Clevenger (six) teamed for another 15 lethal shots.
Milner totaled 32 assists.
