Cambridge senior has great shot at state golf medal

COLUMBUS, Neb. — Cambridge senior Macy Jones holds a Class C state golf medal by one stroke entering today’s final round on the Elks Country Club course.

Jones was set to tee off at 10:39 a.m. today following her 91 in Monday’s opening round.

She claimed 15th place which would earn the final state medal if Jones can maintain her position through today’s 18 holes.

However, both Broken Bow freshman Molly Custer and Kimball senior Kaitlin Heeg fired 92 to start today within one stroke of Jones’ medal.

Jones took the lead over both when she hit par on hole 17 with three strokes.

Custer could only bogey the 17th while Heeg needed six strokes to finish it.

Heeg hit par on No. 18 but could only gain one stroke on Jones entering the clubhouse Monday.

Jones reached par on four other holes while playing consistently through the round. She never needed more than six strokes to complete any hole.

The Trojan showed her state tourney experience while playing Class C for a third consecutive year.

During her sophomore year, Jones helped Cambridge make Class C’s top three at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte.

Columbus Scotus (369) built a five-stroke lead over defending Class C champ Broken Bow (374) on Monday.

Lincoln Lutheran held third (386) with the Mitchell Tigers (405) and Valentine fifth (408). Sophomore Cecilia Arndt of Scotus topped a tight individual race through Monday.

Her 78 was one stroke lower than Southwest Conference golfer Lynzi Becker (79) from Cozad.

Lincoln Christian’s Olivia Lovegrove fired 81 to reach the top three.

Class C state golf concludes today .

In Class B at Scottsbluff Country Club, Elkhorn North (335) holds a solid lead over Omaha Duchesne (359) and host Scottsbluff (362).

Elkhorn North senior Emily Karmazin (72) and soph Julia Karmazin (75) lead individually.
