Indians fall twice at first tourney in Laramie
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday in the season-opening Laramie County Community College tournament. MCC lost a 3-1 contest to Dodge City Community College and then lost a five-set match to the host school.
MCC lost to Dodge City 20-25, 32-30, 23-25, 12-25. Against LCC the scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25 and 6-15.
"Even though our record doesn't show it, I believe this was a good weekend for us," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
After an opening-day, five-set win over Colorado Western Friday, MCC falls to 1-2 on the season
"We played three tough teams and we learned a lot about ourselves and what we can improve on," Kobza said.
MCC will travel to Norfolk for four games in the Northeast Community College tournament Friday and Saturday before returning for the home opener Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. against Southeast Community College. That will be followed by the 15-team, two-day Mid-Plains Community College Labor Day Tournament Sept. 3-4 in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. MCC will take on Laramie County CC to start off the Friday slate at 11 a.m. and Independence Community College at 5 p.m. On Saturday MCC plays Iowa Western Community College at 11 a.m. and Garden City Community College at 4 p.m.
SATURDAY RESULTS:
DODGE CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3, McCook Community College a: Jordan Jerome, (sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo.,) led the MCC attack with 16 kills, three assist blocks, and a solo block. Thaynara Isabela, freshman, São Paulo, Brazil, had 12 kills, one solo block and one assist block with three aces.
Freshman Makayla Brown, Colorado Springs, had 10 kills and two assist blocks. Freshman Jaycee Widener, freshman, Wellfleet, had five kills. Mia Pena, sophomore, Greeley, Colo., was credited with five kills and two assist blocks.
Janie Sommer, sophomore, Maxwell, had 40 assists, three kills and an assist block.
Amanda Pizzol, freshman, São Paulo, Brazil, had 10 digs. Victoria Thomas, freshman, Houston, Texas, had two kills.
LARAME COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3, MCC 2: Mia Pena paced the MCC attack with 11 kills and two assist blocks. Thaynara Isabela had 10 kills, five assist blocks, one solo and an ace serve. Jordan Jerome had seven kills and 12 digs.
Jaycee Widener had six kills, one assist block, and two aces. Victoria Thomas was credited with two kills.
Kaylee Palmieri (sophomore, Gibbon) was credited with 13 digs. Janie Sommer had 29 assists, four kills, one assist block and one solo.
