‘Retro 1971’ theme set for 50th anniversary of Heritage Days
McCOOK, Neb. – Heritage Days turns 50 this year, so the theme will be “Retro 1971” according to Chamber President Brandi McConnell. Brandi said planning is just beginning, but vendor applications for Norris Park are available online at https://bit.ly/3rDrBcG, or they can be picked up at the chamber office.
Brandi said there is a lot of excitement for Heritage Days this year. She said she has been contacted by a couple of businesses who do not normally participate in the parade asking for information. There has also been preliminary work done on securing entertainment for Heritage Days.
“I feel like this is one of the busiest times of the year, right after Crazy Days and just hopping right into Heritage Days,” Brandi told the Gazette. She also said that retail businesses seemed to be pleased with the turn-out for Crazy Days; many expressing surprise by the size of crowds on Saturday. Brandi credited the Cruisin’ the Bricks car show hosted by Wagner Auto Group as well as Lemonade Days for the increased Saturday business traffic.
The chamber’s Education Committee is organizing a “New Teacher’s Breakfast” on August 28, and Brandi gave special recognition to Walmart for hosting the event. Because of Covid, the breakfast did not happen in 2020, so Brandi said all new teachers, coaches, counselors, and administrators for 2020 and 2021 are invited to attend. The event is open to new personnel in McCook and throughout the surrounding area. Those interested in attending should contact Brandi at the chamber office.
A chamber mixer is being planned for August 27 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. hosted by Community Hospital for the Medical Specialists Center and the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab Center.
In addition to organizing these events, the chamber is also working to find volunteers to serve on several chamber committees. The chamber has lots of opportunities to serve, and they would like to find dedicated volunteers who have a passion for a particular event or topic. Committees include Education, Crazy Days, Christmas Promotion, Heritage Days, Golf Tournament, Annual Banquet, and the Government/Advocacy committee.
McCook Christian Church was selected as the third quarter Honor Business by the Chamber Board of Directors. Brandi said McCook Christian Church was chosen as the result of the Freedom Festival that the church organized around Independence Day. “That event was really successful for our community and [the chamber board] felt like church members put all this time and effort in and really did something that benefited our community as a whole.” A presentation will be upcoming.
