Langdon to be sentenced for felony manslaughter

Tuesday, June 22, 2021

McCOOK, Neb. — An 80-year-old McCook woman who admitted to shooting her husband to death after what she said was 30 years of abuse will be sentenced for first degree manslaughter.

Lavetta Langdon entered a no-contest plea June 1 to one count of felony manslaughter, in exchange for prosecutors reducing the charge from felony murder. A felony charge of using a firearm to commit a felony was dismissed.

On Aug. 20, 2020, Langdon said her husband, Larry B. Langdon, 78, had struck her and she warned him if he hit her again, she would kill him. After he did so in an argument over money, she went to her room, thought about killing him for 30 minutes, shot him in the chest while he was sleeping then called the police.

She will be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. in Red Willow County District Court on July 12.
