McCOOK, Neb. — You’re taking aim at McCook High tennis girls?

Ha-ha, better brace for the rapid-fire response!

Targeting Bison for defeat backfired like a big shot of sunscreen back in the face last weekend.

“We knew going into the meet we were the team with the bullseye on our backs,” coach Matt Wiemers said while brilliantly offering free donuts from Sehnert’s to certain observers Saturday morning. “But the girls played well and with a lot of confidence. They played consistently which led to fewer unforced errors.”

Or how about no errors when checking the weekend win-loss record?

McCook’s eight varsity girls teamed to go 38-0 between two dual sweeps on Friday and another clean sweep of home invitational matches Saturday afternoon.

The dual results appear at right where top singles players Megan Hodgson and Joslyn Hammond lost just two games total. They then teamed to go 16-1 through their No. 3 doubles matches.

Seniors Elsa Wilcox, Olivia Koetter went 16-2 at No. 1 doubles. They also both dropped exactly one singles game.

Seniors Lexi Hauxwell and Emily Kjendal also conquered all their challenges with no match closer than 8-4.

“The girls continue to beat players they should and continue building some pretty good resumes for the state meet,” Wiemers observed. “With just three meets left in the regular season, we need to continue taking advantage of the opportunities.”

The Bison are targeting high Class B seeds and another team title quest.

They totaled 52 points on Saturday while breezing past closest challengers Ogallala and Scottsbluff, who scored 22 apiece.

North Platte took fourth with 21 while other Bulldogs from Gering scored 13 points to complete this five-team McCook Invitational.
