Rawlins wrestlers rock and rule tournament
BIRD CITY, Kan. — The Rawlins County (Kan.) Buffaloes had a blast with 175 points to win Saturday’s Gabel-Jenkins Invite at St. Francis High School.
Rawlins outwrestled six other teams including runner-up Goodland, Kan., who scored 114 and perennial Kansas powerhouse Norton (78.5 points).
No fewer than 11 Buffaloes captured first or second place in their weight divisions.
Kendrick Woody smoothly stole victory hopes from three opponents — and no match lasted longer than 19 seconds into the second period.
Woody needed only 15 seconds, 1:25 and 2:19 to clinch his 182-pound championship.
He totaled 20 team points while rugged Buff Eddie Hanson scored 22 during his 152-pound title surge.
Hanson pinned his last two foes including a 45-second pin.
Preston Bearley delivered another title at 220 where he took a tough 5-4 decision from Dexter Dautel of Goodland.
Gus Hanson took home Rawlins’ other weight class title at 106.
Obadiah Jones (160), Josh Popp (170), Cyrus Green (195), Jayden Reed (132), Kenneth Micek (138), Omar Sanchez (285) and Abraham Crespo (113) all placed second for Rawlins County.
Drew Withington scored two pins to win the 145 consolation title.
Devils update
HOXIE, Kan. — The Decatur Community (Kan.) scored 70 points for sixth among 10 Hoxie Invitational teams last weekend.
Gavon Uehlin won the 182-pound title with two pins and a 5-3 finals win.
Josh Juenemann placed second at 106 and Reece Grafel earned third (138) for the Red Devis, who entered only five wrestlers.
