HAYES CENTER, Neb. – Clayton Loomis, age 86, of Hayes Center, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2020, at Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Neb.

Clayton was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Hayes Center to parents, Joe E. and Elva Lucille (Newport) Loomis. Clayton was one of two siblings who grew up in Hayes Center, attending school and graduating from Hayes Center High School with the Class of 1951. He then went on to further his education before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served his country from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956.

He briefly lived in Kansas City, Mo., before moving to Denver, Colo., where he started working for the United States Postal Service (1962). In 1965, Clayton married Beverly (Crooks) Loomis in Cheyenne, Wyo. Beverly passed away on June 29, 1989, and the following year, Clayton retired to his home in Coal Creek Canyon. In 2005, he returned to Hayes Center.

Clayton was a member of the Shriners and enjoyed driving his El Jebel Dune Buggy in many parades. He was a life member in the Elks Club, the Disabled American Veterans Association, the Boulder Colorado American Legion and the Masons. He was active for many years in the Wallace American Legion, that later became the North Platte American Legion. He also served on the Hitch and Hay Board and the Hwy 25 Reconstruction Board and was active in the Congregational Church

Clayton enjoyed traveling the world with his special friends. His favorite ventures included trips across America and to Europe, Asia, Russia and South America. Clayton had a passion for corvettes and was an outdoorsman who spent time fishing and hunting. Family and friends were important to him and he attended reunions whenever possible.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly Loomis; and a brother-in-law, Bob Alred.

Those left to celebrate his life include his stepson, Sterling (Laurie) Muth of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister, Ila Alred of Englewood, Colo.; nieces and nephews, Linda (John) Corbin of North Platte, Neb., Patti (Danny) Carter of Crofton, Neb., and Mike Alred of Littleton, Colo.; numerous great-nephews and nieces, as well as his Loomis and Newport cousins, including Mike (Judy) Roach of Centennial, Colo., who came to visit him often.

A celebration of Clayton’s life will be on Monday, July 13,a2020, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the Union Congregational United Church of God, Hayes Center, where he was a member.

Burial of cremains with Military Honors will follow in the Hayes Center Cemetery.
