CULBERTSON, Neb. — Gary Lee Barth of Culbertson passed away Thursday, July 11, 2019, at Kearney Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.

Gary was born on Oct. 11, 1947, at McCook, Neb., to parents, Willis and Florence (Redmer) Barth. He graduated from Culbertson High School with the Class of 1966. He continued his education at Kearney State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business education.

On July 30, 1977, he was united in marriage to Donna Welsh at Culbertson. They made their home in the Culbertson community, where they raised their three children, Marshall, Danielle and Jonathan. Gary worked for Samway Floor Covering and Furniture as a salesman for six years and he started farming with his parents in 1982. He worked part-time for the USDA Farm Service as a surveyor for the past 15 years. He was devoted to his children and the farm, allowing them to have chickens, goats, sheep, cattle, dogs and cats.

Gary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson. He served on the town board for four years and low-rent Housing Board for 30 years.

In Gary’s free time he loved gardening, playing cards, reading (particularly the newspaper from front to back), and Husker Sports, especially football, basketball and volleyball. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he enjoyed following all their activities.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Willis and Florence Barth; brother, Ronald Barth; and granddaughter, Sierra Schermerhorn.

Survivors include his wife of almost 42 years, Donna Barth of Culbertson; son, Marshall Barth of Kearney, daughter, Danielle (Tony) Schermerhorn of Culbertson and son, Jonathan (Abby) Barth of Culbertson; five grandchildren, Kirsten Schermerhorn, Sonya Schermerhorn, Dane Foster, Brayden Schermerhorn and Lydia Barth; numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name to Culbertson United Methodist Church or Culbertson Ambulance Squad.

Visitation will be Monday, July 15, 2019, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel, McCook. Friends may send words of comfort to the family at www.herrmannfh.com

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 16, 2019, 10 a.m., at Culbertson United Methodist Church with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Burial will follow in the Culbertson Cemetery.
