MCCOOK, Neb. — The brilliant smell from a nearby charcoal grill signaled McCook’s tennis girls were making burgers of their final two dual foes Thursday afternoon.

They didn’t leave even a crumb for Holdrege or Hastings Adams Central, sweeping both 9-0 to complete the delicious 13-0 dual season.

Only one match in each dual featured a margin closer than 8-2.

There were 13 victories by 8-0 or 8-1.

“I was impressed with with the level of play against two competitive teams,” coach Matt Wiemers remarked as both the Dusters and Patriots have placed high at various tournaments this season.

Senior Kassidy Michaelis reached 39-0 at No. 1 singles — though McCook’s varsity six feature an impressive record overall of 135-11.

McCook’s No. 1 doubles are now 35-3 following two more Riley Hansen-Kori Uerling victories — both by 8-1.

Senior Syd Stewart’s 33-5 at No. 2 singles thanks to two 8-2 wins on Thursday.

“She used the whole court and made her opponents play defensive tennis,” the coach observed. “Sydney has been playing well.”

Meanwhile, the No. 2 Bison duo of senior Delaney Jumps and sophomore Megan Hodgson have reached 28-6.

They conquered the closest contest all day, 8-6 over a fesity Holdrege No. 2 doubles team.

“Delaney dominated at the net in doubles play and Megan was hitting ground strokes that set up Delaney for easy points,” Wiemers explained. “They were fun to watch today. They got pushed by a good Holdrege team.”

Most importantly, the Bison didn’t suffer any letdowns before next week’s Class B state tournament.

They should earn some good seeds when play starts on Thursday at the Woods Tennis Center.

“The seeding committee looks at how teams finish the season,” Weimers concluded. “It gives teams more weight in the seeding process.”

The Bison JV tennis girls also took 23 of 26 matches in their home/season finales on Tuesday. Watch for results and more details from those matches next week. State pairings will also appear in an upcoming Gazette.
