Walk-offs start rough road openers for MCC

SNYDER, Texas – The McCook Community College Lady Indian softball team opened their season Friday with a pair of walk-off losses, falling to Western Texas 4-3 in the first game, and 8-7 in nine innings in the second game.

Western Texas evens up its season slate now at 2-2.

GAME 1 -- Western Texas 4, McCook CC 3: In the bottom of the seventh inning, Western’s Nikki Medina broke up a 3-3 tie with an RBI single.

The Westerners got things started taking a 1-0 lead in the first and stretching it to 2-0 in the fifth inning.

The Lady Indians came back to take the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

After a leadoff walk, freshman Brooklyn Jensen, (West Valley City, Utah) delivered a two-out double to put the Lady Indians on the board.

Freshman Jade Hollands, (Effingham, Kan.) singled to right to score Jensen, and freshman Sydney McArthur (Washington, Utah) doubled in Hollands to give MCC the 3-2 lead.

Sophomore Shae Muggridge, (Perth, Western Australia) went the distance in the circle and took the loss (0-1) giving up 11 hits in 6.2 innings, she walked one, struck out five and allowed three earned runs.

GAME 2 -- Western Texas 8, McCook CC 7 (nine innings): In the bottom of the ninth, Western’s Kristina O’Banion delivered the walk-off RBI-single to send the Lady Indians to defeat.

MCC took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, sophomore Sieara Price, (Greely, Colo.) delivered a bases-loaded single to start the scoring followed by back-to-back walks to make it a 3-0 game. With two outs, Jerusha Miner lined an RBI-single to make it 4-0 and the fifth run scored on a throw.

Western fought back with a pair of runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and two in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Five MCC players saw action in the circle. Freshman Sarah Willier, (Ponoka, Alberta) pitched 2.1 innings and gave up a pair of earned runs.

After giving up the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, MCC came back with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, the first on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Emily Charchuk (Victoria, British Columbia) and the second on an RBI-single from Miner.

VERNON, Texas, -- The McCook Community College softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to start the season 0-4. The Lady Indians lost to Vernon College 12-7 and 20-9.

GAME 1 – Vernon College 12, McCook CC 7: Leading 1-0 in the first inning on a Chanel Siebenthal (Lakewood, Colo.) single, the Lady Indians loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t capitalize and the Chaparrals took momentum of the game with four runs in the second inning, and added three in the third.

MCC stormed back in the sixth with five two-out runs.MCC had 11 hits in the game with two each by Siebenthal, Serna and Charchuk.

GAME 2 – Vernon College 20, McCook CC 9: The Chaparrals took charge scoring seven runs in the first inning and making it a 9-0 lead in the second inning.

The Lady Indians collected 11 hits in the game led by three each from Miner -- who drove in five with a pair of doubles and a triple -- and Siebenthal who singled twice, doubled and scored two runs.
