McCOOK, Neb. — Shelter director Lorie Prestes can't contain herself — she thanks just about the whole world for the love shown to and the funds raised for the dogs and cats of the McCook Humane Society during the 13th annual "Shoot for the Shelter" pool tournament Saturday, Jan. 26.

"It was an absolute and huge success," Lorie said Sunday. "It was awesome, even … because of the total support of this amazing community, from the people donating the amazing prizes, the folks who hosted the event, the ones who really seem to enjoy playing in this fun event every year, and the ones who help make it happen."

The tournament raised $2,771 for the shelter. "It could not and would not have happened without a lot of folks helping out and donating time, services or items," Lorie said.

Every year, Lorie loves the fun and excitement of the tournament. "During the event, looking around, you saw folks having a good time, visiting with friends, playing pool and telling 'pet' stories," Lorie said. "There were points in the day when the laughter was so contagious, it would take my breath away!"

Sixty-four entrants made up the 32 competing teams. The winners were:

1. Marshall Tucker and Brandon Burton; prize donated by Double Barrel Transport; 2. Brett Holloway and Eric "Smitty" Smith; prizes donated by Western Nebraska APA Pool League and McCook's WalMart SuperCenter; 3. Damon Barber and Tom Harris; prizes donated by McCook National Bank, Ag Valley Coop, McCook's Ace Hardware, Willow Creek Meats and Old Sarge's Bar; and 4. Kasandra Lazaro and Tammy Dike; prizes were donated by McCook National Bank, Frenchman Valley Coop, D&S Hardware and Lord's Hardware of Indianola.

Lorie said that TJ's Family Fun Center provided breakfast and lunch, and donated a portion back to the shelter. "We sure appreciate their hospitality and friendliness," Lorie said.

Lorie said, "Thank you, kind sir," to guest auctioneer Chad Elson; also a thank you to her husband, Jay, for his assistance with the tournament; and to Coyote Country, KICX 96.1FM, and the McCook Gazette for their promotions of the fund-raiser.

Lorie said she appreciated the help of humane society board members Andrea O'Dea, Levina Fritsche, Mary Keslin, Joyce Peterson and Darrin Glading for their coordination of the raffle ticket sales, which raised $802 by themselves.

First through fourth place plaques were donated by McCook Lettering and the t-shirts printed also by McCook Lettering. Brackets were printed and donated by Miller and Associates, and the pre-registration bags were printed and donated by Acme Printing Company.
