MCC spikers add a Colorado crusher
McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College volleyball team signed another player Wednesday when Eaton High School (Colo.) senior hitter Quinci Johnson signed her national letter of intent to play volleyball in the fall.
“I came to open tryouts last summer and felt really welcome here by Coach Kobza and players and everybody I came in contact with,” Johnson said. “I liked the feel of it and how well MCC seemed to suits me that I came back for a second open tryout.”
Impressions became strong on both sides.
“The players were impressed with how well she did at her first tryout but when she came back for a second time, it was pretty obvious how much she wanted to be a part of our team,” MCC coach Hayley Kobza said.
Johnson, a 5-8 hitter, is expected to play multiple positions for the Lady Indians.
“I think that is one of her strengths is her versatility and being able to go back and forth between the right side or outside,” Kobza said.
“I’m just happy to be part of this group that looks to build on what’s taken place the past several years,” Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to bonding with my teammates because they are going to be my family for the next two years and I plan to work hard to earn a spot on this team.”
Johnson, who played softball and ran track in middle school, decided to focus on volleyball her freshman year at Highland High School, then transferred to Eaton, where her team won state in 2017, and made it to the semifinals this past season.
“From a recruiting standpoint, we’ve had good luck with players who come from winning programs,” Kobza said.
Johnson plans to focus on nursing classes when she enrolls for classes in the fall.
