LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Sen. Dan Hughes said during a conference phone call this morning with McCook Chamber members that clean up of invasive species along rivers are good projects, and along the Republican River specifically help Nebraska comply with the 1943 three-state Republican River Compact.

Sen. Hughes said, "That's why I protect NCORPE and Rock Creek," groundwater pumping projects designed to augment Republican River water supplies and help prevent the shutdown of irrigation along the Republican.

"Shutting down irrigation would have a devastating impact on irrigators and all the communities along the river," he said.

Hughes said funding for river clean-up projects has been the victim of budget cuts in the past, but that he has been able to get some funding in the past couple years; the clean-up on the Medicine Creek will be paid for with funds from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

  • Why is another Gov't. agency still cost sharing to plant these invasive species?
