Trenton, Stratton say 'no' to sales tax

TRENTON, Neb. — The majority of voters in Trenton and Stratton at the polls Tuesday said “no” to taxes earmarked for general tax relief.

The village of Trenton was asking for a 1 1/2 percent sales and use tax to help pay for infrastructure, streets, economic development and bonded indebtedness. The vote was 109 against the tax and 68 in favor of it.

In Stratton, 95 voters said “no” and 47 said “yes” to a 2 percent sales and use tax also earmarked for infrastructure, streets, economic development and bonded indebtedness.

Other Hitchcock County results:

County assessor: Terra Riggs, 962 votes, 7 write-in votes.

County clerk: Margaret Pollmann, 982 votes, 6 write-ins.

County attorney: D. Eugene Garner, 859 votes, 19 write-ins.

County sheriff: D. Bryan Leggott, 905 votes, 17 write-ins.

County treasurer: Jacki Drain, 964 votes, 12 write-ins.

County commissioner, District 1: Paul Nichols, 307 votes, 5 write-ins.

County commissioner, District 2: Ron Wertz, 319 votes, 4 write-ins.

Hitchcock County school board: (3 positions) Stacey Hutto, 494 votes; Craig Scott, 472; Ted Rippen, 401; 19 write-in votes.

Wauneta-Palisade school board: (3 positions) Allison Sandman, 93 votes; Laurie Maris, 97 votes; Marty Wheeler, 91 votes; 8 write-ins.

Dundy County/Stratton school board: (5 positions) Sandy Noffsinger, 140 votes; Brad Baney, 130 votes; Kevin League, 81 votes; Jason Frederick, 140 votes; Toby Marlin, 71 votes; Steve Guernsey, 84 votes; Nick Ladenburger, 202 votes; 5 write-ins.

Culbertson village board: (2 positions) Jason Smith, 91 votes; Roma Sensel, 143 votes; Monte Cooper, 99 votes; 1 write-in vote.

Palisade village board: (2 positions) Reid Ott, 85 votes; Jason Hicks, 58 votes; 11 write-ins.

Stratton village board: (2 positions) Jerry McDonald, 85 votes; Thomas Jones, 98 votes; Christina League, 47 votes; 8 write-in votes.

Trenton village board: (2 positions) William Neely Jr., 71 votes; Cindy Borges, 121 votes; Jessy McArthur, 72 votes; 54 write-ins.
