SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — McCook’s softball girls delivered a fantastic response to their dramatic one-run, walkoff district tournament loss:

Only allow one more run in the next two games!

The Bison blanked Scottsbluff, 8-0; and smacked Gothenburg 7-1 to stay in this Class B state tournament chase.

Seeded seventh among eight teams, McCook (9-20 record) joins No. 1 North Platte, No. 2 Gering and No. 6 Chadron in the final four facing off today.

The defending B-6 champion Bison plated 25 runs during three games on Thursday.

They built a 9-5 opening over Gering thanks largely to senior Laurel Schmidt’s two home runs — including a grand slam.

Junior Brolin Morgan belted two hits, scored twice and drove home another two.

Savannah Donovan (double) and Trinity Raburn both added huge RBIs only to see those 19-9 Gering Bulldogs rally.

McCook caught the canines one more time at 10-10 which only set up Hannah Splatstosser go splat on Bison victory hopes with a walkoff home run.

No problem.

Sophomore pitcher Emma Kehler controlled the next two “elimination” contests.

First, she threw a one-hit complete game and homered in the 7-1 knockout of Gothenburg.

Junior Candace Coleman and Donovan both crushed thre hits while junior Kaylin Martin drove home two runs.

The Bison were even more dominant late Thursday night against those host Bearcats.

McCook unleashed 13 hits while scoring in four consecutive innings.

Coleman went three-for-three (three RBIs) and Martin drilled two doubles among her three hits (two runs, RBI).

Graci Nelson (run), Raburn (two RBIs) and Schmidt (run, RBI) adding two hits apiece.

Kehler permitted three hits during her five shutout innings.

Now McCook aims for three more wins starting today: the same path those Bison took to last year’s state tourney.

McCook went 3-0 on the final day featuring two huge wins over B-6 No. 1-seed North Platte.
