Strunk monument installed
A crew positions the new “Strunk memorial” monument at the corner of Norris Avenue and H Street in McCook Wednesday afternoon. The memorial will be officially unveiled during McCook’s Heritage Days celebration, at 1:30 p.m., Saturday. The Georgia gray and India black granite memorial measures 10 feet by 5 feet and weighs 6,400 pounds. It rests on two 3x2-foot granite boulders that weigh 2,100 pounds each. Helping with the installation were Tim Daum and Aaron Koetter of Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home, Joe Leamon of JL Construction, Dustin Payton of DP Lawn Care and, on the crane, Mike Baumfalk of Doak Construction. Harry D. Strunk (1892-1960) was the founder of the McCook Gazette and a visionary conservationist for whom the lake northwest of Cambridge is named.
