MNB rallies past Kearney, but struggles at tourney

Monday, June 11, 2018

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — McCook National Bank’s 3-2 comeback win over Kearney Jersey Sports Grill on Saturday highlighted an otherwise tough weekend for the Seniors Legion baseball team.

The Seniors finished 1-3 with a narrow defeat to host North Platte followed by losses against Omaha South and district foe Holdrege.

However, they did rally against Kearney Jerseys.

Leading hitter Cameryn Berry singled to start the MNB sixth inning. Berry’s batting better than .400 through the 13 games this season.

Berry moved to second on a Kearney error, then DJ Gross singled home for a 2-2 tie.

Following another Kearney miscue, Justin Barenberg delivered his best hit this season as the single sent Gross across home plate.

Now leading 3-2, Trae Kotter battled through a two-out, two-on threat and finished his complete game.

Shortstop Seth Dugger caught a line drive to keep Kearney from perhaps catching the Seniors.

Koetter won quite a final battle. Runners were at third and second base, but he recorded one more strikeout that closed the MNB victory.

McCook only kept momentum until Omaha South unleashed a 15-run first inning in the next contest.

Holdrege also surprised MNB, 10-3, thanks to a late six-run rally. The Seniors will play next at Cozad Wednesday evening.
