Nebraska’s volleyball community is rallying around one of its own this weekend and is asking the public to join in the cause.
Innovation Volleyball, a training and consulting group that offers lessons, clinics and advice to players, coaches and families, is organizing a Volleyball Skills Clinic to help offset medical expenses for the Ben and Alexa McCall family.
Alexa is the head volleyball coach for North Platte Community College. The McCall’s daughter, Hadlee, was born in North Platte on Jan. 19, 2018, but was transferred to Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha due to medical complications. She will remain in Omaha for at least five more weeks, according to an update on the YouCaring website.
All of the proceeds from the clinic will be given to the McCalls. Innovation Volleyball is joining forces with Alexa’s players at NPCC as well as some of her former coaches and teammates from her volleyball playing days at Concordia University to put on the fundraiser.
“Alexa was my student assistant during my first year as head coach at Concordia,” said Scott Mattera, owner and lead coach of Innovation Volleyball. “She has been a great friend and is a wonderful young leader in the volleyball community. When we heard about what she, Ben and Hadlee are battling, we wanted to find a tangible way to help the family. The volleyball community in Nebraska is a very supportive one, and we wanted to give that community a chance to show it cares. We are so excited to be able to do what we do to help one of our own while giving kids in Western Nebraska an opportunity to have a great time working on their skills for a great cause.”
The clinic will be Saturday in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on NPCC’s South Campus. It will be open to fifth through eighth grade students from 1-2:30 p.m. and to high school students from 2:30-4 p.m.
The cost is $20 per person. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Mattera at coachmattera@gmail.com by Friday.
