Larry Mollring

Sept. 1, 1946 - March 14, 2018

LINCOLN, Neb. — Larry Mollring died on March 14, 2018, in Lincoln after a battle with cancer.

Larry Mollring was born on Sept. 1, 1946, in Cambridge, Neb., to J.R. and Betty (Leopold) Mollring. He spent his formative years in Arapahoe, Neb., and graduated high school from Holbrook, Neb., in 1964.

Larry graduated from Doane College in 1968. A four-year, two-sport letterman, Mollring played defensive back, receiver and special teams on a football team that "refused to lose," going undefeated his junior and senior years. Larry also competed in track as a long and triple jumper and is Doane's former record-holder in the triple jump (a record that was eventually bested by one of his former athletes). During his years at Doane, he was a member of Alpha Omega fraternity and the Honor D Club.

He married Diane (Renner) in 1967. They moved to McCook, Neb., where they raised their family and began their lifelong careers in education.

Mollring impacted nearly every sport and team in Nebraska. He started his career as a history and physical education teacher, football and track and field coach at Red Willow/Republican Valley, and then spent 30 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator in McCook. He impacted thousands of students and athletes with his compassion, the ability to instill confidence, and a sense of humor.

He dedicated 10 years as a football official and 20 years as a basketball official, including officiating in the Nebraska State Basketball Tournament.

Mollring completed a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2003, the same year he became the Nebraska School Activities Association's Assistant Director. He was responsible for cross country and track and field and was the supervisor and coordinator for Nebraska officials. In 2008, he added the title of meet director for the Nebraska State Track and Field Meet. He was awarded the Honor D award from Doane College in 2009 and retired in 2013.

Although athletics were an integral part of his life, Larry was a bit of a Renaissance man. He enjoyed music, going to theater productions, reading historic nonfiction, and quoting Shakespeare. He loved shoes, fine wine, and good food. Known for his impeccable taste and quick wit, he was a personality not to be forgotten.

Larry spent his retirement doing what he loved—traveling the world with his wife and following his grandchildren’s activities.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughter and son-in-law, Andi and Brandon Mann; his son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Patty Mollring; and six grandchildren, Madeline and Lillian Mann, and J.R., Sophie, Macy, and Miles Mollring. He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara and C.R. Goodin, Jeff and Sue Ann Mollring, Rod and Suzi Mollring, and Nanette and Roger Witte; his in-laws, Dennis and Tina Renner, Robert and Deb Bals; much-loved nieces and nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.R. and Betty Mollring, and his mother-in-law, Genevieve Renner.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. on Monday March 19, 2018, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 8550 Pioneers Blvd., in Lincoln.

Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.
