Indians swing into big home weekend

STERLING, Colo. -- The McCook Community College Lady Indian softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday at Northeastern Junior College. NJC won 5-3 in the first game and MCC came back to win 14-11 in the second game.
The Lady Indians are 9-7 on the season and have a pair of doubleheaders at home this weekend against Trinidad State.
Saturday’s games start at 1 p.m. and Sunday’s games start at 11 a.m. at the Jaycees Sports Complex.
NJC 5, MCC 3: The Plainswomen came up with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh for the walk-off win.
Emily Charchuk (Victoria, B.C.) doubled, singled and drove in one for the Indians. Taylor Ford (McCook) went two-for-three and Kaylee Wengren (Taylorsville, Utah) drove home two with a triple.
Taya Thorpe (Malad, Idaho) went the distance and took the loss (6-7), allowing six hits, two walks while striking out three.
MCC 14, NJC 11: In the second game the Lady Indians struck for seven second-inning runs to take a 9-1 lead but surrendered nine runs in the third to trail 10-9.
Neither team scored until the seventh when the Indians’ offense ignited for five runs.
The Lady Indians banged out 16 hits in the game. Isabel Serna (Roy, Utah) was four-for-four with a home run,a double and five RBIs.
Four players each had two hits including Charchuk, Jerusha Miner (Gunnison Valley, Utah), Alexis Moeaki (Las Vegas) and Taylor Ford. Rylee Younger (Thornton, Colo.) hit a home run for MCC.
Thorpe (7-7) picked up the win surrendering eight hits and two earned runs over 6.1 innings. She walked three and struck out two.
