OAKLAND, Neb. -- Traveling over 500 miles roundtrip, Cambridge left a good impression in northeast Nebraska.
The Trojans took third at the D-2 District Meet at Oakland-Craig High School and qualified four for the Class D State Meet later this week.
Three Trojans won their weight class in Seth Andrews (220), Matthew Pearson (182) and Tyler Schultz (285).
Andrews had pin fall victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals before scoring a major decision over Tri County’s Chase Barnts in the championship match 14-2.
After defeating 31-win Justin Kuta of Palmer in the semifinals, Pearson scored a 13-6 victory over Elkhorn Valley’s Shawn Klientobe in the championship match of 182 to book his ticket to Omaha.
Schultz, however, had the most dramatic win of the three Trojan champs. Cambridge’s heavyweight representative scored a sudden victory over hometown favorite Justyn Hale of Oakland-Craig to win the 285 title.
Miller-Sickels also punched his ticket to Omaha with a third-place finish in 126. Miller-Sickels rebounded from a pin fall loss to Keegan Casey of Thayer Central and pinned Creighton and Elgin/Pope John wrestlers in the next two matches to win the consolation title.
Keegan Benson (195), Bobby Evans (160), Shane Horwart (106) and John tenBensel (120) saw their seasons come to an end in the heartbreak round of their weight classes.
Elkhorn Valley managed to pull away for the D-2 District title with 162 points. Tri County was second with 140.
