WEEPING WATER, Neb. -- Southwest scored three state qualifiers and a top-5 team finish at Saturday’s D-1 District Meet in Weeping Water.

The Roughriders tallied 90.5 team points to finish fifth and were led by a trio of runner-up finishes.

Cody Downey (195), Kaden Guerrero (126) and Anthony Starr (220) finished second in their respective weight classes to earn a spot in the Class D State Tournament, which begins Thursday at the Omaha CenturyLink Center.

Downey made the 195 finals after winning a tight semifinal against Guardian Angels Central Catholic’s Jaden Rahn in a 2-0 decision. Downey fell in the championship match to Ansley/Litchfield’s Seth Racicky in a 6-1 decision.

Guerrero started the 126 bracket with a bye and two pin fall victories to send him to the first-place match against Burwell’s Coy Gideon. Guerrero would ultimately drop that gold medal match in a close 8-6 decision.

Starr had two pin fall victories to propel him to the final of 220, but Overton’s Schuyler Brown would pin Starr at the 2:41 mark to win the weight class. Brown is still unbeaten this season at 24-0.

Southwest had four more wrestlers -- Logan Kircher (285), Garrett Latimer (120), Wyatt McConville (160) and Matthew Van Pelt (138) -- lose in the heartbreak round.

Arapahoe, the other Gazette school to make the trek to Cass County, finished 15th in the team standings and qualified one wrestler in Tyler Kapperman.

Kapperman finished fourth in 120, thanks to a pin fall victory over Burwell’s Cooper Stout in the consolation semifinal.

That win sent Kapperman to the third-place match, where he lost to Twin River’s Jaxson Jones in a 4-0 decision.

Isaac Goshert made the consolation semifinals of 106, but was bested by Burwell’s Colten Dawe in a 8-5 decision. John Lee (145), Jonah Shimmin (126), Shane Sieja (113) and Fryderyk Sitnik (138) all lost in the consolation third round.
