Southwest splits at Axtell
Southwest 54, Axtell 30 (boys)
AXTELL, Neb. -- Southwest scored 33 first half points to defeat Axtell 54-30 Saturday in Kearney County.
The Roughriders jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first quarter before outscoring the Wildcats 19-10 in the second to take a 33-19 lead into intermission.
Any idea of an Axtell comeback was put to bed early in the second half, as Southwest outscored the Wildcats 13-5 to make it 46-24.
Bryan Leslie led Southwest (9-11 record) with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Derek Greenlee had 12 points in support.
Ryan Hubbard had 14 points to lead Axtell (6-15).
The Roughriders close out the regular season with a game against Maywood-Hayes Center on Friday.

Axtell 56, Southwest 43 (girls)
AXTELL, Neb. -- The fourth quarter proved the difference in Axtell's 56-43 win over Southwest in the girls' contest of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Lady Wildcats, holding a 38-34 lead after three periods, outscored the Lady Roughriders 18-9 in the final frame to pull away for their 12th win of the season.
Axtell (12-10 record) got a game-high 18 points from Paige Kirby and another 14 from Caitlin Callan.
Individual statistics for Southwest (4-15) were not obtained at the time of press.
Southwest begins postseason play with a game against Dundy County-Stratton in the first round of the C2-10 subdistrict. The game will be Tuesday at the McCook Community College Graff Event Center, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
