Karragan Shaw of McCook thought she’d get a headstart on the most recent snowfall, scooping it as it fell Sunday evening. She’d have another six inches or so to scoop before the snow ended — McCook’s official snowfall report was 10 inches. “It’s a heavy snow,” Karragan said.

Across town, Abriel Hickenbottom and her little brother, Travyn Minnick, put some fun in the snowfall and sculpted a wall with it. The snow storm hadn’t taken on blizzard status as Karragan, Abriel and Travyn spent time outside; the wind picked up later in the evening and through the night to Monday morning, creating drifts and hazardous driving conditions in the blowing snow. The snow and wind forced many schools and businesses — including the Gazette — to close Monday. Today, some schools remained closed, while others, including McCook, started two hours late.
