Bison duo places in Norton tourney

NORTON, Kan. — Kansas powerhouse Norton and a talented tourney field didn’t stop the McCook Bison from earning some high places on Saturday.

Freshman Alec Langan reached the 182-pound title match while teammate Trevor Felber finished fourth at 113.

Carson Richards (120) and Taylyn Campbell (126) were both just one win from earning another pair of top four places.

“This seems to be the cream of the crop as far as Kansas tournaments during the weekend,” Bison coach Nick Umscheid confirmed. The Norton Bluejays are again ranked No. 1 in Class 3A-2A-1A.

“There were teams from 6A all the way down to 1A and many talented wrestlers,” Umscheid added.

The Bison aren’t wrestling with a full lineup as wrestlers like senior No. 1-ranked Kaleb Taylor are still recovering from injuries.

However, Langan and others made quite an impact. He now has 18 wins this season and Umscheid believes he could reach McCook’s varsity single-season record of 32 for freshmen.

“To go into a tournament that big shows how hard he is working in the practice room and how competitive he is on the wrestling mat,” Umscheid concluded.

Felber fell just a 3-1 decision from joining Langan in the championship round.

The Bison concludetheir mid-season Kansas tour at Saturday’s Oberlin Invitational.
