McCOOK, Neb. — A Curtis man with a history of criminal activity in the area was sentenced to jail time recently in Red Willow County District Court on recent convictions for felony drug possession and driving on a revoked license.

The offender, 31-year-old David M. Griffitt, accepted a plea agreement in July admitting guilt to a Class IV felony offense for possession of methadone and a misdemeanor offense for driving on a revoked license. During a Sept. 11 sentencing hearing Griffit was ordered to serve 300 days in county jail on the felony and a concurrent 90 days on the misdemeanor. He was given credit at sentencing for 94 days already served.

The plea agreement dismissed four additional charges, including two Class IV felonies alleging possession of methamphetamine and possession of alprazolam; and infractions alleging possession of drug paraphernalia and a stop sign violation.

Griffitt was arrested by Red Willow County Sheriff’s Deputies on June 8, 2017, following a traffic stop near the intersection County Road 719 and Drive 386. The traffic stop stemmed from Griffitt failing to stop at a stop sign and subsequently led to his arrest on multiple drug related and traffic offenses.

In February of 2016 Griffitt was sentenced in Red Willow County to a similar 300 days in county jail on a Class IV felony offense for possession of methamphetamine and a consecutive 90 days on a second Class IV felony for attempted possession of a deadly weapon by a convicted felon. He was given credit for 86 days already served at the time of that sentencing.

Griffitt’s plea agreement in the 2016 conviction dismissed an infraction alleging possession of drug paraphernalia and reduced the weapon charge from a Class 3 felony alleging possession of a deadly weapon, to the lesser attempted possession offense.

Griffitt was also one of two men sentenced to jail time in 2014 stemming from a break-in and assault at a McCook residence on South Street. He accepted a plea agreement in that criminal case admitting guilt to a Class I misdemeanor offense of third degree assault and dismissing two felony offenses for burglary and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. Griffitt’s accomplice in the crime, then-23-year-old Dustin Fitzpatrick, was sentenced to 18-36 months in state prison for his role in the crime.
