Red Willow Western firefighters used a winch line to steady a van that rolled into a ditch north of McCook at 9:08 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2, on county road 719, 1.7 miles north of McCook and 3/4 of a mile east of Highway 83. Fire chief Bill Elliott operated a winch to upright the van after Nebraska State Patrol Sgt. Joel Smith completed his on-site investigation. Smith reported that the 1997 Chevy Venture van was driven eastbound by Jina Maleksarkissians, 28, of North Platte, who lost control as she tried to negotiate a hill, went into the north ditch, came back onto the gravel road and rolled into the south ditch, coming to rest on the driver’s side. Maleksarkissians was not wearing a seat belt and was transported to Community Hospital by City of McCook ambulance personnel. Her passenger wore a seat belt and was uninjured. The Red Willow County’s Sheriff’s Office assisted Smith on the scene. The van was totaled.
