CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Adeline Virginia Ballou, age 90, formerly of Wilsonville, Neb., passed away surrounded by her family at the Cambridge Manor on Friday, June 23, 2017.
She was born in Hastings, Neb., on Nov. 28, 1926, to Adam and Mary (Kennedy) Dieken. At the age of two, her mother passed away, her father remarried and she was raised by her step-mother, Emma. Adeline grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School in 1944. She enrolled in the Mary Lanning School of Nursing and was pinned and capped in 1947 as a registered nurse. It was there at Mary Lanning that she met Charles Ballou. The couple were united in marriage on April 25, 1948, in Hastings. Charles preceded Adeline in death on Oct. 1, 2002.
Adeline was employed as a nurse for over 40 years at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She was busy with her family, attending many school and sporting events as they grew. Adeline loved her grandchildren and continued to follow them to sporting events, school plays and musicals, and even watched her grown children officiate sporting events. She was active in her church, UMW, Community Clubs: Busy Bee’s, Double 8’s and other women society events of Wilsonville. Adeline enjoyed crocheting, reading, and loved to be around her family.
Preceded her in death were parents, Adam and Mary Dieken; step-mother, Emma; daughter, Jeanne Martin; sister, Mary Jane and husband, Neil McDowell; great-granddaughter, Lilly Loch; brothers-in-law, John and wife, June Ballou, Roger Ballou and Clarence Courtright.
Adeline is survived by her daughter, JoAnne and husband, Brad Schwartz of Kearney; three sons, Barry and wife, Gretchen Ballou of Hastings, Brent and wife, Colleen Ballou of Wilsonville and Brad and wife, JoLynn Ballou of Beaver City: 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack and wife, Chieko Dieken of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and son-in-law, Phil Martin of Clay Center, Kan.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Baptist Christian Church in Wilsonville with Pastor Keith Theobald officiating. Interment will be in the Wilsonville Cemetery.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge. Friends may leave on-line condolences at lockneour.com. Memorials may be left in Adeline’s name to Wilsonville Library, Wilsonville Cemetery, or Baptist Christian Church.
