MCCOOK, Neb. — Ellis Lyle Sutton, 96, a retired farmer-stockman, passed away Monday night, June 12, 2017, at Community Hospital in McCook.

Ellis was born on a farm north of Stratton on Feb. 21, 1921, to James and Mabel (Gallagher) Sutton. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1938.

Ellis married the love of his life, Ruth (Petsch) Sutton in Lincoln on Nov. 28, 1942.

All through their active years, Ellis and Ruth farmed in Hitchcock County. After more than 20 years on a farmstead north of Stratton, they moved to a farm south of Palisade in 1965, and lived there until their retirement in 1981.

Following that, Ellis and Ruth enjoyed many special trips with family and friends. For many years, they spent their winters in Casa Grande, Ariz.

In the fall and winter months, Ellis and Ruth lived in Palisade and McCook, where they enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with their family and friends. Golf and playing pitch were two of Ellis's favorite hobbies.

Throughout their married years, Ellis and Ruth were members of the Church of Christ, first in Stratton and later in McCook. Ellis was also a devoted member of the Masons and Shrine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabel Sutton; his wife, Ruth; his sister, Hazel Brice; and three brothers, Donald, Warren and Gerald.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara and husband, Gene Morris of McCook; his granddaughter, Debra and husband, Tilman Adair, of Littleton, Colo.; his grandson, Rodney Long, of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; his great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Adair, of Littleton, Colo.; his brother, Morrison Sutton, of Stratton; and his sister, Janice and husband, Harold Cheves, of Albuquerque, N.M.

Funeral services for Ellis Lyle Sutton will be Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the McCook Church of Christ, beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Wayne Vogel will officiate.

Visitation is Wednesday, June 21, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to greet friends. Condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com.
