CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — A late 86-84 battle with Dundy County-Stratton brought out the best from Southwest’s track and field boys on Monday.

The Roughriders picked up their pace while winds died down during this annual Don Stine Invitational.

They dominated several of the final races:

Orlando Morquecho earned his second hurdles victory of the day when he won 300 intermediates by almost two full seconds;

Seniors Alec May and Alec Van Pelt turned on their “jets” down the home stretch to finish 1-2 among 200-meter dashers.

Van Pelt finished in 24.16 for the title while May crossed at 24.55 — just before McCook JV speeder Drew Harvie (24.65).

Southwest then delivered a terrific title-clinching finale in the 1600-meter relay.

As nearby observers declared “this will decide it”, the Roughriders left no doubts when Logan Greenlee, Marquecho, Van Pelt and May finished four treks around the Cambridge track.

Their final time of 3:45.29 topped host Cambridge (3:49.69) while finishing a 122-point performance.

Southwest took home the Don Stine title with a 12-point triumph over always dangerous DC-S (110).

Earlier event titles helped Southwest secure its first invite team championship this season.

Field events featured the same dynamite duo — Van Pelt and May — going 1-2 among long jumper.

May’s leap of 21’1 1/2” actually took the title by nearly two feet.

Meanwhile, junior Derek Greenlee was delivering triple jump heroics. He took first thanks to a leap of 41’10 1/2”.

Wauneta-Palisade senior Greg Gaston stopped the Southwest quest to sweep all jumping events, but Greenlee finished a close second in that high jump.

Junior Logan Greenlee achieved that same second-place feat in the pole vault.

He cleared 12’6” through tricky breezes and teammate Kaden Guerrero topped 12’ for third place.

Only Dundy County-Stratton senior Phalen Sanford — the Don Stine Most Valuable Male Athlete — went higher when he cleared 13’. More omplete results appear at left.
