Roughriders rule RPAC wrestling race

Recaps from the RPAC wrestling tournament on Friday at Curtis:

Team scores on Friday: 1. Southwest 196.5, 2. Southern Valley 186.5, 3. Medicine Valley 169, 4. Cambridge 144, 5. Arapahoe 137.5, 6. Dundy County-Stratton 96, 7. Loomis-Bertrand 77, 8. Hitchcock County 68, 9. Alma 62, 10. Maxwell 44, 11. Wauneta-Palisade 4.

106 pounds: Sophomore Brenden Warman, Dundy County-Stratton (24-5 record), won the championship with four first-period pins.

Warman's fastest finish was 12 seconds and the longest match took just 1:31 against Southwest's Joel Costello.

Arapahoe senior Edwin Aguirre placed third as he scored one win and a pin.

Costello finished fourth.

113 pounds: Hitchcock County freshman Seth Hare (11-13 record)won the title thanks to three pins.

Southern Valley freshman Trenton Wray took second overall, but was pinned in 3:07 against Hare.

Sophomore Matthew Wissink of DC-S placed third and Southwest soph Simon Moore was fourth.

120: Arpahoe junior Tyler Kapperman (25-5) won the title with three pins and a 7-0 win over runner-up Zach Janousek of Hitchcock County.

This weight class featured four wrestlers owning 16 or more wins this season. Kapperman pinned Southern Valley's Jared Bennett (3:06) and Zack Miller-Sickels from Cambridge (3;05).

Janousek (14-4 record) conquered his other three matches including a 2:47 pin vs. Bennett.

Bennett placed third and Miller-Sickels finished fourth.

126: Southwest sophomore Kaden Guerrero continued his awesome 25-3 season as he pinned all four of his foes for the team champion Roughriders.

Medicine Valley soph Reid Stout took second and battled Guerrero until a pin with 34 seconds left in their match.

Stout scored three of his own pins, which is why Arapahoe sophomore Jackson Koller placed third and Cambridge's Austin Wineland finished fourth.

132: Medicine Valley senior R.J. Tutlam-Hazen delivered a championship for the home fans as he pinned Jesse Evans from DC-S in 5:06.

Evans (16-10) placed second and Southern Valley junior Riley Mustin shook off a semifinal loss to pin Cambridge's Josh Paisley in the consolation final.

138: Loomis-Bertrand's Brandon Wallander won the title over runner-up Ryan Van Pelt from Southwest (21-12) and Southern Valley senior Elmer Gonzalez (21-13) which formed the top three.

145: Medicine Valley Dylan Davis-Mack (16-3 record) took the title when he won 9-5 over previously unbeaten Max Diedrich from Southwest (21-1).

Southern Valley sophomore Shawn Anderson earned third when he pinned Cambridge sophomore Kaden Benson in 3:26.

152: Cambridge senior Konner Banzhaf rolled through the RPAC tourney, scoring four pins and a 15-4 major win.

Banzhaf pinned Med Valley's Justin Anderson in 1:07 for the title.

Anderson scored a semifinal upset -- at least based on season records -- by topping Hitchcock's Wyatt Standiford (20-7 record) 7-4.

Standiford defeated Southwest senior Alexander Dack 7-2 for third place.

160: Southern Valley junior Chase Becker's now 31-2 after he pinned all five foes on Friday.

His title match went only 1:47 vs. Alma 20-match winner Joseph Felix.

Med Valley's Justin Pendleton won third when he defeated Wyatt McConville of Southwest, 6-4.

170: Cambridge junior Matthew Pearson took a 5-2 showdown from Arpahoe's Dalton Shimmin to decide this conference title.

Both Pearson (23-9) and Shimmin (10-5) pinned their other four opponents on Friday.

Southern Valley senior Kasey Miller (18-13) placed third, pinning three.

182: Med Valley senior Scott Taylor (24-4)won the title over great challengers Brady Dawson of Southern Valley (28-8) and Southwest's Cody Downey (24-4).

Taylor topped Dawson, 7-4, and won a 5-1 decision over Downey.

Dawson edged Downey, 5-4, to claim second place.

195: Alma's Jesus Felix III (21-11) was champion thanks to his 6-3 victory over Cambridge's Trace Doyle (19-5 record).

220: Arapahoe senior Robert Gardner reached 30-6 with four pins.

285: Southwest sophomore Logan Kircher (24-8) earned the championship with huge wins over Arapahoe senior Noah Wadliegh (12-5), DC-S sophomore Dakota Erhart (10-4) and Cambridge junior Tyler Schultz (18-10).
