Kearney wins GNAC tennis, Bison finish seventh
HASTINGS, Neb. -- No one was catching Kearney High.
The Bearcats finished Saturday's Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tennis invite at Hastings with 41 team points to cruise to the team title. The Bearcats finished 15 points ahead of runner-up Columbus (26), while North Platte (21), Scottsbluff (19) and Hastings (18) rounded out the top five.
McCook finished the day with 16 points for a seventh-place finish.
"It was a rough day for the team," said Bison head coach Matt Wiemers. "We played hard, but couldn't find a way to come out on top in a number matches."
The Bison were led by Sam Knoll, who finished fourth in No. 2 Singles. Knoll finished the day 4-3, with wins over Scottsbluff, Norfolk, Columbus and Hastings.
"The bright spot for us was Sam," Wiemers said. "His performance got him a fourth-place medal."
Wiemers said the Bison also "had a decent day," from Josiah Hegwood and Von Fritsche at No. 1 Doubles. The duo finished the day 3-4, with wins over North Platte, Norfolk and Lexington teams.
McCook's Spencer Krysl played No. 1 Singles, and finished the day 2-5. His wins came over Scottsbluff and Hastings. Meanwhile, Zion Moyer and Caden Bortner teamed up at No. 2 Doubles to finish 2-5, with their wins also coming against Scottsbluff and Hastings.
Up next for the Bison will be a junior varsity invite at Kearney High today. The varsity return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when it travels to Ogallala to take on Alliance and Scottsbluff.
