Republican River stories sought

TRENTON, Neb. -- Those who witnessed the 1935 Republican River Flood, or have stories about it, are encouraged to attend a presentation by Joy Hayden Sunday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the community building in Trenton.

Hayden will give a slide show presentation on her recently published book, "The 1935 Republican River Flood," sign copies of her book and collect more stories if possible.

"I always look forward to hearing stories about the flood," Hayden said, a graduate of Fort Hays State University. "It's really a fascinating story and it would be a shame for it to be forgotten." Her research for the book took seven years, as she traveled through Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado speaking to survivors of the flood and others.

The presentation is being sponsored by the Hitchcock County Historical Society. Harold Potthoff, one of its directors, hopes people with stories of the flood will attend.

"We need to preserve these stories now, because once the people who were there are gone, their stories are gone, too," he said.
