Top Pigskin Pickers score 75 percent in week of upsets
McCOOK, Neb. -- In another week of upsets, the best guessers in the McCook Gazette Pigskin Picks' contest had four misses, giving them a 75 percent success rate for their professional, college and high school football predictions.
Winning the top prizes in last week's prediction competition were Ted Anderson of Wauneta, who won the $25 gift certificate in the readers' contest, and Samway Floor Covering & Furniture in the sponsor's contest, with their guest picker, Anita Lytle, qualifying them for a free ad with four misses in the 20-game contest.
Two of Anderson's misses were in the pro ranks and two were in the college contests. The games Anderson missed in the pro ranks were Minnesota's win over Chicago and Denver's victory over Green Bay. In the college games, Anderson failed to foresee Purdue's triumph over Nebraska and Iowa State's defeat of Texas. Anderson's tie-breaker prediction was 59 points, only four points off the combined score 45-10 in the Kansas City-Detroit game.
Samway's guest pigskin predictor, Anita Lytle, correctly guessed that Purdue would upset Nebraska, but she failed to predict Iowa State's win over Texas; the New York Jets loss to the Oakland Raiders; the Green Bay Packers loss to the Denver Broncos; and the Atlanta Falcons' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
