PALISADE Neb. -- Viron Eugene Baxter, 93, of Palisade, passed away July 10, 2015.
Viron was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Palisade, to Arlie J. and Margaret E. (West) Baxter.
Viron graduated from Palisade High School in 1940. Two years later, Viron entered the United States Army Air Corp on Oct. 8, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on Sept. 16, 1945, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During that time, he served his country in World War II in the following battles; Northern and Southern France, Rhineland, Po Valley, Normandy, and Central Europe.
On June 2, 1942, he married Mildred Birt in Hickman, Nebraska. To this union, four children were born. He worked at Frenchman Valley Bank, retiring in 1988. Also during that time, he was a real estate broker and insurance agent.
Viron was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 135, VFW Post No. 7028, American Legion Post No. 318, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite and many other Masonic organizations. He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church where he served on the board. He served on the Palisade school board and county election board. He was a big Republican supporter. For over 30 years, he served as a volunteer fireman and enjoyed photography, genealogy, yard work and he enjoyed playing the saxophone in the Shrine and Maverick Bands.
Surviving him is his wife, Mildred Baxter of Palisade; one son, David (Debi) Baxter of Kingwood, Texas; three daughters, Judith (Darrel) Wissmann of Bertrand, Nebraska, Barbara (Jon) Reilly of Omaha, Nebraska, and Patricia (Gerald) Post of Palisade; sisters, Rosalie Schluckebier of Jackson, Michigan and Kay (Bob) Green of Yuma, Arizona; and sister-in-law, Leona Baxter of Palisade. Also surviving are six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and their families.
Viron was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; Richard Baxter; and brother-in law, Paul Schluckebier.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Palisade with the Rev. Bonnie McCord officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Palisade Cemetery.
