KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Helen M. Gedminas, 93, died June 22, 2015, in Kansas City, Kansas.
She was born July 29, 1921, in Selden, Kansas, to Joe and Mary Sulzman. She graduated from Selden High School in 1942. She then went to nurse's training at Saint Margaret's School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas. Upon graduation, she returned to McCook to work at Saint Catherine's Hospital.
She was married to William J. Gedminas at Sacred Heart Church in Kansas. "Bill" came home on leave from the army during World War II. Helen and Bill hitchhiked to Oberlin, Kansas, to obtain a marriage license. Due to gas rationing, they hired a car to transport the family to Selden for the wedding. The wedding was attended by Joe and Mary Sulzman. They made their home in Kansas City, Kansas. To this union five children were born, William J. Jr., James, David, Bobby and Mary Helen.
Helen worked at Saint Margaret's Hospital and at Providence Hospital in Kansas City. For 28 years, she worked in labor and delivery at Providence Hospital. She was overjoyed by all of the babies she helped deliver and care for.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Saint Peter's Altar Society, Solos Senior Citizens Club and Heavenly Dusters. She served as a Sacristan and Eucharistic minister. She volunteered at the church for the soup kitchen and funeral dinners.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joe Sulzman; her husband, Bill in 1986; her sons, William J. Gedminas Jr. and Robert R. Gedminas, both in 2005; her daughter, Mary Helen Gedminas in 2009; and her sister, Delores M. Hope in 2014.
She is survived by children, James P. Gedminas and wife, Kay, David A. Gedminas and wife, Francie of Kansas City, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernadine J. Wood of McCook Nebraska, and Bernice Hayes of Kansas City, Missouri.
The rosary and funeral mass were celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Peter's in Kansas City, Kansas, June 26, 2015. Entombment is in Mount Calvary Mausoleum.
