Walter W. Castle

OBERLIN, Kan. -- Walter W. Castle was born July 3, 1927, in Decatur County, Kansas, to Walter and Gertude (Oxley) Castle. He passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society-Decatur County in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 87.

Walt and his two sisters were reared on the family farm seven miles northwest of Oberlin. He attended a country grade school and graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1945. He then went on to serve his country in the Army Security Agency and was honorably discharged in 1947.

On June 10, 1950, Walt was united in marriage to Beverly Joanne Ater at the United Methodist Church in Oberlin. They made their home on the farm, where Walt was born and raised. Two sons and two daughters blessed their union.

Walt worked the family farm all of his life. In addition, he served in Oberlin as the Chief of Police for 10 years. With his wife, Joanne, they owned and operated the Chief Theater and Curb Service for over a decade. Walt was a member of the Oberlin United Methodist Church and his hobbies and interests included hunting, trap shooting, reloading ammunition, playing snooker and bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne, of Oberlin; two sons, Dan and wife Diane, of Oberlin and Joe, of McCook, Nebraska; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Jeff, of Rifle, Colorado; nine grandchildren: James and Annie, Travis and Krista, Sundi and Baron, and Lucas, Austin and Dylan; six great-grandchildren (plus one on-the-way); and many other family members and friends.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cathy; and two sisters, Grace and Opal.

Family and friends are invited to gather Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Oberlin American Legion from 10 a.m. to noon, with a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. Rev. Tom Smith will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Walter Castle Memorial Fund and sent to Pauls Funeral Home, 121 N. Penn Ave., Oberlin, KS 67749.
