GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Lois M. Schmitt, 84, of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.

Services will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Apfel Funeral Home, 1123 West 2nd Street in Grand Island, with Derek Apfel officiating. Burial will be in Trenton Cemetery, Trenton, Nebraska, at 3 p.m.

Visitation hours will be on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family.

Lois M. Schmitt was born June 9, 1930, near Trenton in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, the daughter of John Oren and Mable (Marietta) Makings. She grew up and received her education in Trenton, graduating from Trenton High School with the class of 1948.

She was united in marriage to Robert L. Schmitt on May 8, 1948, in Trenton, Nebraska. The couple resided in Sidney, Nebraska, Wauneta, Nebraska, Columbus, Nebraska, and Seibert, Colorado, before moving to Grand Island.

She loved to crochet, Swedish weaving and doing genealogy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert L. Schmitt of Grand Island; son and daughter-in-law, Larry R. and Jolene Schmitt of Grand Island; four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Ken Viken of Burlington, Colorado, Karen K. and Gene Iverson of Boise, Idaho, Betty A. Gumm of Marysville, Ohio, and Brenda Jane and Dave Wiesen of Poplar, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mable Makings and two brothers, Marvin and Richard.
