CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Velda Jean Hill, formerly of Wilsonville, passed away at Cambridge Manor in Cambridge on April 3, 2015.
She was born near Wilsonville, Nebraska, to Simon and Frieda (Ruhs) Wolzen on Aug. 24, 1928, the oldest of six children.
Velda was untied in marriage to LaVon Hill on Dec. 14, 1944, and to this union five children were born: Virginia Lee, David Lynn, Alan Eugene, Randall Marion and Myrna Sue.
Velda was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hendley in 1943. Later she joined the Christian Church in Wilsonville and was baptized in the church along with LaVon. Velda taught Sunday school and helped as an aide for Bible school. Volunteering was a major part of Velda's life. She served as a greeter for the Nebraska Game and Parks, the Howdy Booth and the Mansion on the Hill in Ogallala. She delivered Meals on Wheels, assisted young children with reading at school, and volunteered at county fairs and community activities.
Velda was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for over 70 years, Wilsonville Saddle Club, card clubs and community organizations. She enjoyed Nebraska history, cooking, sports, especially Nebraska football, volleyball and basketball.
Velda was preceded in death by her parents: husband, LaVon of 52 years; daughter, Virginia Parriott-Krajewski; two sons, David and Alan Hill; son-in-law, Stanley Krajewski; grandson, Jerrel Parriott and brother, Merlin Wolzen.
She is survived by her son, Randall and wife, Denise Hill of Wilcox: daughter, Myrna and husband, Randy Harper of Indianola: eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Zehlsdrofs of Indianola, Nebraska and Gwen Holz of Kearney, Nebraska; two brothers, DeWayne "Bud" Wolzen of Cambridge and Glenn Wolzen of Orleans, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Baptist Christian Church in Wilsonville, Nebraska, with Keith Theobald officiating. Interment will be in the Wilsonville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked memorials to the Baptist-Christian Church, Tri-Valley Health System of Cambridge or the New Hope Church in Ogallala.
The family will be present for visitation on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary. Friends may leave on-line condolences at lockenour.com.
