OBERLIN, Kan. -- Violet Irene Schissler was born Feb. 14, 1919, in Rawlins County, Kansas, to Charles and Mary (Hokenson) Henningson. She passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society-Decatur County in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 96.
Violet and her siblings were reared on the family farm eight miles southeast of Herndon in Laing Township of Rawlins County, Kansas. She attended District No. 11 Grade School and graduated from Decatur County High School with the class of 1937.
On Sept. 1, 1942, Violet was united in marriage to Carl Schissler in Norton, Kansas. They farmed and made their home in Laing Township of Rawlins County and raised their five children there. The family attended the Enne Lutheran Church, which merged with the Faith Lutheran Church in Oberlin in 1961, and was active in the Cloverleaf 4-H Club in Rawlins County.
Carl and Violet moved from the farm to Oberlin in 1986.
They remained active in the Faith Lutheran Church, where Violet was a member of the church choir and ALCW. In addition, she was a member of the Golden Rule Club of Rawlins County. Violet grew up in a musical family and enjoyed music and singing all of her life. She also enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by her five children, Carol and Ron Martin of Littleton, Colorado, Dan Schissler of Oberlin, Steve Schissler of Herndon, David Schissler and Jan Clapp of Oberlin and Cindy and Gary Gillespie of Watkins, Colorado; six grandchildren, Jennifer Jensen, Emily Nylund, Zeff Gillespie, Jesse Gillespie, Carisa Gillespie and Chelsey Hackney; six great-grandchildren, Kassidie, Kennedy, Breckyn and Davin Jensen, Landry Nylun; and Tripp Donelan; nephews and nieces, other family members and friends.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; parents; and three siblings, Edmund Henningson, Myrtle Schiessler and Pearl Kleidosty.
Funeral services were Monday, April 6, 2015, at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with Pastor Shelly Holle officiating. Burial was at the Oberlin Cemetery.
