McCOOK, Neb. -- Max R. Brodersen, age 71, died at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015.
He was born in Harlan, Iowa, on Feb. 25, 1943, to Hans Henry and Eleanor (Frederickson) Brodersen. He attended school in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School in 1961. He went on to study at Morningside College in Iowa, graduating in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in education. He served a few years in the Air National Guard in Sioux City, Iowa, and was an offensive lineman (center) for the semi-pro Omaha Mustangs in the late 1960's.
Max took his first teaching and coaching job at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in David City, Nebraska, teaching and coaching football until 1970. On July 12, 1969, he was united in marriage to Carol Hiller in Bellwood, Nebraska, at St. Peter's Catholic Church. In 1970, Max moved to McCook, where he accepted a position at McCook Community College to teach and coach the football team. He later became the athletic director for the college, a position he held until 1974. Max then went to work for First National Bank of McCook. It was during this time that Max also worked as the play-by-play announcer for McCook Bison football and basketball games on KICX radio. After suffering a heart attack in 1993, Max chose to leave his job with the bank and went to work for Kugler Oil Company until 2009 when he retired.
Max was well known by many of his peers and friends from across the state. Max had a passion for sports, as well as a love for hunting waterfowl and playing golf. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and following their many activities. Max was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook and held many offices and chairs in the McCook Elks Lodge and the United Way Campaign of McCook.
Max was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard.
Max is survived by his wife, Carol of McCook, Nebraska; daughter, Michelle and husband, Marc Hodgson of Ponca City, Oklahoma; sons, Rich and wife, Brandy of Kearney, Nebraska, and Mike and wife, Sheila of Papillion, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Hatcher of Harlan, Iowa.
Visitation will be today until 6 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until after the rosary. Family will be present at 5:30 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook, Nebraska. Family inurnment will take place at the Jacksonville Township Cemetery near Harlan, Iowa, at a later date.
