Raymond Dwayne Jones

OBERLIN, Kan. -- Raymond Dwayne Jones was born July 8, 1928, in Oberlin, Kansas, the son of Raymond H. and Florence B. (Pruden) Jones. He passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 86.

Dwayne was raised in Oberlin, where he attended Oberlin Elementary School and Decatur Community High School, graduating with the Class of 1946. In January of 1947, he began working at Farmers National Bank of Oberlin as a bookkeeper and teller. During the Korean War, Dwayne served in the United States Army from 1951-1953 and attained the rank of corporal. He returned to Oberlin and resumed working at Farmers National Bank. Dwayne served on its board of directors from 1956-1997 and was president and CEO at the time of his retirement on Dec. 31, 1993.

On June 17, 1956, Dwayne was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Portschi in Herndon. They made their home in Oberlin all of their married life. A son and two daughters were born to their union, and they were also blessed with two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Over the years, Dwayne was an active and supportive member of his church and community. He was a member of the Oberlin United Methodist Church, Mountain Slope Lodge No. 186, Order of Eastern Star No. 106, Isis Shrine, and Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70. In addition, Dwayne served on the Oberlin City Council, the first Housing Authority Board, Decatur County Health Foundation, Decatur County Museum Endowment Fund Committee, and Board of Directors of the Kansas Bankers Association, for which he served as treasurer for a time. Dwayne and Betty enjoyed traveling and were avid golfers. Dwayne helped build the first golf course in Oberlin and taught junior golf to youth in the community for many years.

Dwayne is survived by his wife, Betty of Oberlin; son, Todd Jones of Topeka; daughters and son-in-law, Tonya and Eugene Tally of Oberlin and Tina Jones of Phoenix, Arizona; sister, Shirley Carlisle and husband Don of Dewey, Arizona; sister-in-law, Anita Bertrand and husband Gene of Oakley; grandsons, Jeremy (Jenny) Tally and Jordan Tally of Oberlin; and great-grandson, Silas Tally. His parents preceded Dwayne in death.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Kevin Burkhardt officiating. Burial was in the Oberlin Cemetery with military rites by the Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70 and Oberlin Legion Riders.
