McCOOK, Neb. -- Vesta Elaine Gilbert, age 89, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at her home in McCook.

Vesta was born to Vinton E. and Velma I. (McKnight) Brown on April 13, 1925, in Naponee, Nebraska. She graduated from Max in 1942.

She married Denzel Floyd Gilbert on August 20, 1944 in Atwood, Kansas. Three daughters were born to this union.

Vesta loved having big Sunday dinners after church and surprise birthday parties on the farm at Achilles, Kansas. She always had a big garden and helped Denzel on the farm. In her spare time, she enjoyed working on crossword puzzles. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the lights of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Denzel; infant sister, Zeta; brother, Vinton, Jr; son-in-law, Carl Adams; grandson, Steve Alexander; sisters-in-law, Gly Shaw and Alby Gilbert; brothers-in-law, Walt Shaw and Ben Hammerschmidt.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon and husband, LaVern Frick of Herndon, Kansas, Sherrel Adams and Gwen Gilbert of McCook; brother-in-law Jay Gilbert of Colby, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Cletis Hammerschmidt of Hayes, Kansas, and Volna Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name and sent to Sherrel Adams, 1002 West 5th st, McCook, NE 69001.

Graveside services will be during the spring of 2015.
