OBERLIN, Kan. -- Everett Lavern Gerdes passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, at the Cedar Living Center in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 92.
He was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Cadiums, Nebraska, to Edward and Louisa Gerdes. Everett was baptized in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, and confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gilead, Nebraska, located in Thayer County. He began school at the Lamb School in Williams, Nebraska, continued his education at District No. 45 in Thayer County, and graduated from high school in Hebron, Nebraska.
On Nov. 12, 1945, Everett was united in marriage to Nell Louise Ross in Hebron. They first resided near Hebron and Hubbell, Nebraska, where he farmed and loved to work the land. Everett moved his family to Oberlin, Kansas, in 1958 and was employed as a carpenter. He continued to work with the land as a hobby by gardening and was known for his large vegetable gardens and beautiful flowers.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fred Gerdes; sisters, Esther Gerbering and Albie Bock; and daughter, Lorri Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Nell, of Oberlin; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Faye Gerdes, of Macon, Georgia; granddaughter, Lacee Cantu and husband, Matt of Evans, Colorado; great-grandson, Keenan Cantu; three step-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one nephew and three nieces.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with Rev. Gene Gee officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service time.
