McCOOK, Neb. -- Barbara Anne Pantenburg, age 73, of McCook, Nebraska, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Community Hospital in McCook.
Barb was born Aug. 23, 1941, in Trenton, Nebraska, to Harvey Joseph and Florence Mary (Blue) Chapman. She was one of eight children. Barb attended school in Trenton, graduating from Trenton High School in 1959. She then attended Kearney State College, earning a bachelor of science degree in education in 1962. In 1974, Barb earned her master's degree in education. While attending college in Kearney, she was a member of the Wagoneers.
On Aug. 22, 1964, Barb married Robert Pantenburg in Trenton. The couple made their home in Trenton, Indianola and then McCook in 1968. They were blessed with three children: Tony, Jon and Brette.
Barb was an avid knitter and Nebraska Cornhusker fan. She was also known for making the best brownies in the world. She enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle, visiting many of the national parks in the western United States. In her younger years, Barb enjoyed fishing and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Barb spent many years teaching public school. She taught for two years in Indianola, three years in Trenton and taught from 1968 to 2000 in McCook Public Schools. She was a member of St Patrick Catholic Church, the McCook Education Association, Nebraska Education Association and the National Education Association.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Florence Chapman and her brother, William "Oscar" Chapman.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Pantenburg of McCook; two sons, Tony (Tracy) Pantenburg of North Platte, Nebraska, and Jon Pantenburg of McCook; daughter, Brette (Sean) Hankin of Colby, Kansas; two brothers, Tom (Detta) Chapman of Ashland, Nebraska, and James Chapman of Peru, Indiana; four sisters, Floretta "Tyke" Thompsen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Catherine "Bid" Reiners of McCook, Patricia (Wayne) Lafferty of Lincoln and Shirley "Pud" (Tom) Rine of Waverly, Nebraska; and her six grandchildren, Paige Hurst, Phoebe Pfeifer, Taylor Pantenburg, Tanner Pantenburg, Patyn Pfeifer and Tana Pantenburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, also located in McCook.
Memorial contributions are suggested to either the Heritage Senior Center or St. Patrick Catholic School.
