Timothy John Thompson

Aug. 4, 1946 - Aug. 29, 2014

MCCOOK, Neb. -- Timothy John Thompson was born Aug. 4, 1946, to Denly John and Joye Louise (Heizenreter) Thompson in McCook. Tim's life journey ended on Aug. 29, 2014, in McCook under the care of hospice at his residence.

Tim's life was a special one being mentally disabled. His family was very important to him as he was the happiest when he was with them. Tim spent the majority of his life in Culbertson and McCook, Nebraska. He attended school in Denver at the Wallace School Village for the Disabled in Denver to learn basic skills. His grandmother, Louise Heizenreter, was his champion in life and fostered Tim's love of family. Tim's life was enriched when he entered into the SWATs program at its infancy and was a viable member until his final days.

Tim's main interest was in anything that had a ball involved. He loved sports and was an avid Husker fan. You could find him "tuned in" either on radio or TV to any Husker sporting event. Tim's true love was golf. He developed golf courses in his mind and played all the great courses of the world, hoping to better his score or at least beat the pros. Tim also participated in Special Olympics and was very proud of his medals that he won at district and state meets. 4-H was another interest and he beamed showing off his ribbons that he received at the fair.

Tim developed many friendships throughout his life; his morning coffee group, other food pantry volunteers, and the many members of the SWATS community. Tim was a member of the Lutheran faith and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. One of his proudest moments was when he was confirmed after years of tutoring in church doctrine.

Tim is preceded in death by his parents, Denly and Joye Thompson.

He is survived by brothers, Denly Joseph Thompson (Carol) of Hastings, Nebraska and Matthew James Thompson (Kelly) of Greely, Colorado; and sisters: Sarajane Grandia (Robert) of Loveland, Colorado and Marijill Nickerson (Tom) of Kearney, Nebraska; six nieces, two nephews and nine great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Tom Albertson officiaitng.

Internment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Memorials in Tim's honor can be made to the following: Special Olympics, SWATS, Food Pantry of Red Willow County, Peace Lutheran McCook or St. John's Lutheran Church Culbertson or by doing an act of kindness for another as Tim's heart was full of love.
