INDIANOLA, Neb. -- William A. (Bill) Broomfield passed away peacefully at his home with loved ones around July 16, 2014.
He was born to Jim and Geneva (Ruggles) Broomfield Sept. 25, 1939, in Red Willow County. He graduated from Red Willow School in 1957 and McCook Junior College in 1959. He was drafted into the Army in 1963 and served until 1965. He served in organizations such as the Eagles, where he was a trustee for several years; a member of the Elks Lodge, the Indianola American Legion, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the Republican Valley school board.
He married Barbara Jones on Jan. 4, 1964, in Cambridge, Nebraska. After serving in the Army, they lived on the family farm where Bill was born. He worked for the Burlington Northern for over 30 years, along with taking care of the family farm. They moved into McCook in 2009.
Bill enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, going to their school and sports activities, and meeting their friends. He loved to play sports such as football, basketball, and track (playing in college as well as in the Army). He loved riding his horse through pastures, plus team roping and team penning. He enjoyed playing pool, cards, hunting and was an avid Nebraska baseball fan.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Jim and Geneva, and brother-in-law, Ben Powley.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barb; sons, Jim and wife, Denise of Indianola, Mike and wife Susan, of McCook and Steve and wife, Melissa of McCook; daughter, Geneva Broomfield of Omaha; grandchildren, Cody, Brittany, Cassa, Avery, and Paige Broomfield and Corey Paz; sister, Elda Powley of Norfolk; brother, Bob Broomfield (M.J.) of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Peg Colling (Bob) of Kearney; sister-in-law, Lynette Broomfield of Hastings, and many loving nieces and nephews.
No vistiation will be held as Bill's wishes were to be cremated.
Memorial services will be Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
Memorials are suggested in Bill's name to be designated, by the family, to a local charity.
