ARAPAHOE, Neb. -- Robert "Bobby" D. Martin, 90, of died Sunday (July 13, 2014), at the Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege, Nebraska.

He was born June 9, 1924 on the family homestead south of Hendley, Nebraska, to Robert L. and Louise M. (Kirste) Martin.

He graduated in 1941 from Hendley High School. He married Burdella J. Batchelor on March 10, 1945, before enlisting in the Army in May of 1945 as a paratrooper and serving during World War II. After his service duty, he returned to the with the family south of Hendley.

In 1964, he was the postmaster in Hendley before becoming a rural mail carrier in Wilsonville and Beaver City, Nebraska. He retired in 1988.

He moved to the Beaver City Manor in 2013. He was a member of the Hendley United Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church in Arapahoe. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 96 of Arapahoe and a former member of the Arapahoe Lions Club and McCook Elks Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy; grandson, Sean; sisters, Merna (O.D.) Smith, Irma (Norval) Mart, Glenva (Ralph Hinkle and Edwin Wolzen) Hinkle and Neva (Floyd) Longsine.

Survivors include his wife, Burdella J. Martin of Arapahoe; children,Sheryl and husband, Brian Miller of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, Robert Douglas and wife, Joan Martin of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Stephen C. Martin of Beaver City, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Marian and husband, Harvey Ahrens of Kerrville, Texas; six grandchildren and three step- great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, in Arapahoe, Nebraska, with the Rev. Becky Saddler officiating. Interment will be at Hendley Cemetery at Hendley with Military rites given by American Legion Post No. 96 of Arapahoe and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Guard.

Viewing and visitation is Wednesday, July 16, 2014, from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church of Arapahoe.
