HERNDON, Kansas -- Robert "Bob" Joseph Leitner, 87, of Herndon, died Sunday (June 15, 2014), at Collier Hospice Center in Wheatridge, Colorado.
He was born June 20, 1926, to Herman and Nellie (Heasley) Leitner in rural Herndon on the Leitner homestead. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy during World War II in October 1944 and served until June 1946. He was a 1947 graduate of Herndon High School. He started farming in 1947. He married Lila Jean (Solko) on March 29, 1951. From 1964-2004, he owned and operated the Leitner Standard Service Station.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John (Jack) Leitner.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lila; six children, Linda and husband, Albin Ruzicka of Stratton, Nebraska, Roger and wife, Bonnie, of St. Augustine, Florida, Sam of Arvada, Colorado, Connie and husband, Robert Herzog of Peoria, Ariona, Mary and husband, Ray Carlson, of North Platte, Nebraska and David and wife, Kathy of Atwood, Kansas; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Baalmann Mortuary in Atwood. Vigil is today, June 18, 2014, 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Herndon.
